Bates Community Development Corporation (B.C.D.C.) located at 1228 South Jackson Street engages in a wide range of community development activities and provides social service for the purposes of combating blight and deterioration in the Louisville Metropolitan area and to contribute to the advancement of community life. Reaching Academic Potential An after school program dedicated to providing Shelby Park and Smoketown youth with homework assistance, tutoring, and computer instruction, along with cultural, recreational, and community service field trips. The after school program meets Monday-Thursday from 3-6 p.m. at 1228 South Jackson Street and 619 East Lampton Street.
Bates Academic Summer Enrichment The BASE program offers each child educational growth laughter, diversity and cultural enrichment in an atmosphere surrounded by love, support, and positive interactions with both peers and adults. Children experience lessons in reading, writing, arithmetic, and computer by qualified teachers. Each June and July the program explores the community through cultural, educational and recreational field trips.
Computer Literacy Training BCDC offers beginning and advanced computer and internet literacy to the public. Classes are offered both in the morning and evening each fall and spring. Granny Network
The Granny Network serves as a positive outlet for grandparents or relatives who are raising children the second time around. Our mission is to inform grandparents of available services and activities and to provide an environment to have fun and share concerns with other grandparents. Our goals are to host monthly meetings, provide pertinent information, advocate for grandparents rights, and maintain a supportive fellowship.
Healthy Hearts This initiative was established to provide information to the Smoketown and Shelby Park communities about the necessity of incorporating preventative measures into daily routines. This program consists of volunteers in the medical profession concerned that health issues be addressed in an effort to make the community aware of the importance of good health and agencies that provide various services.
Phenomenal Women
A partnership with Atherton and Iroquois High Schools, this effort strives to build stronger communities through an intensive twelve-week "Rites of Passage" program designed to address issues crucial to the development of young women. The Phenomenal Women meet the 3rd Thursday of the each month at 620 East Lampton Street.
Recreational Family Activities
BCDC sponsors recreational league, fitness, service projects and community fun-day activities for program participants as well as the community at large in an effort to build the whole person.
Survivor BCDC is launching a new initiative to help improve the employability of individuals entering into the workforce and to enhance the job skills of those already in the workforce. Skills such as Computer Training, Job Interview Skills, Resume Writing, Dressing for Success, Time Management, Negotiating the System, Money Management/Credit and Financial Awareness, Career/Group Counseling Sessions (as needed), Goals and Objectives of Participants and Parenting Skills will be addressed.
There’s A Leader In Me Each Wednesday, middle school and high school youth participate in a wide range of activities including a support group, bible study, mission outreach, and recreational activities. BCDC sponsors cultural activities, speakers and an annual college tour each spring. Bible Study is held each Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at 620 East Lampton Street. Workshop/Support Groups Workshops in parenting are offered to caregivers of all program participants and members of the community.
